L'étude de Vicente-Barrero et al. a eu pour objectif d'évaluer l'efficacité de l'acupuncture par rapport à des attelles de décompression occlusales dans le traitement des patients atteints de syndrome douloureux de l'articulation temporomandibulaire (SADAM). L'étude contrôlée randomisée (n=20) a inclus un groupe décompression par attelle (n=10) et un autre acupuncture (n=10 avec utilisation des points EX-HN5, TR21, VB2, TR17, ES6, GI4, ES36, TR5 et VB34). Les résultats ont été évalués par échelle visuelle analogique de la douleur, mesures d'ouverture de la bouche et de l'écart latéral de la mâchoire en millimètres et évaluation de la sensibilité à la pression sur différents points : pré-auriculaire, muscle masséter, muscle temporal et trapèze. Ces paramètres ont été évalués avant et trente jours après le traitement. Les patients traités avec les attelles de décompression ont constaté une réduction de leur douleur subjective et de celle à la pression sur les muscles temporaux, masséters et trapèzes, ainsi qu'une augmentation de l'ouverture de la bouche. Les patients traités par acupuncture ont objectivé également une réduction de leur douleur à court terme et amélioration de tous les paramètres évalués (douleur à la pression et ouverture de la bouche). En conclusion, l'acupuncture est un complément efficace et / ou une alternative acceptable aux attelles de décompression dans le traitement de la douleur myofasciale et du syndrome douloureux de l'articulation temporomandibulaire.
