L'objectif de cette revue systématique et méta-analyse était d'évaluer l'efficacité de l'auriculothérapie dans la douleur en incluant un groupe témoin placebo. Des essais contrôlés randomisés (ECR) ont été identifiés par la recherche sur bases de données médicales jusqu'en mai 2013. Le critère de jugement était le score d'intensité de la douleur. Vingt-deux ECR ont été identifiés et treize ECR ont été inclus pour la méta-analyse. Dans ces études, l'auriculothérapie montre une action antalgique statistiquement significative par rapport à un groupe placebo ou un groupe témoin. Les différences moyennes standardisées globales (SMD) étaient de -1,59 (IC 95% [-2,36, -0,82]) (13 ECR, N= 806), ce qui indique que la diminution moyenne du score de douleur dans le groupe d'auriculothérapie était 1,59 écart-type supérieur à celle du groupe placebo. En terme d'efficacité des différentes méthodes de traitement, l'acupression auriculaire objective la plus grande force de preuve dans l'antalgie, suivie par l'acupuncture auriculaire. Par contre, la stimulation électroacupuncturale n'a pas montré des preuves significatives de son efficacité, ce qui peut être dû à la petite taille de l'échantillon (seuls 19 sujets ont été inclus). En conclusion, d'autres ECR à plus grande échelle sont nécessaires pour déterminer l'efficacité de la thérapie auriculaire dans la douleur, surtout qu'il existe une grande hétérogénéïté.​
