L'ostéosarcome est la tumeur osseuse maligne la plus fréquente chez les enfants et les adolescents et s'accompagne d'algies intenses et de métastases. La médecine complémentaire et alternative, en particulier l'acupuncture, pour traiter les douleurs, la fatigue ou les effets secondaires du traitement chimiothérapique est de plus en plus utilisée par les patients cancéreux. Par contre, on ignore si le traitement acupunctural aurait un effet sur la croissance tumorale et les métastases. De ce fait, Smeeter et al. ont évalué les effets de six protocoles d'électroacupuncture (EA) sur la croissance tumorale et les métastases d'ostéosarcome chez les souris mâles et femelles. Les effets positifs les plus importants ont été observés lorsque l'EA (4Hz, 100µs, 30mn) a été appliquée au point d'acupuncture ES36 (zusanli) deux fois par semaine (EA-2x/3) en commençant le traitement à partir du troisième jour après l'implantation de tissu cancéreux. Ce traitement deux fois par semaine a produit des réductions importantes de la croissance de la tumeur. Inversement, lorsque l'EA a été appliquée deux fois par semaine à partir du septième jour après l'implantation des tissus d'ostéosarcome, la croissance tumorale était augmentée de manière significative. Il a été démontré également que le traitement EA-2x/3 suscite d'importantes réductions des vaisseaux lymphatiques, vasculaires et nerveux au niveau des tissus tumoraux. Enfin, l'EA-2x/3 a entraîné une réduction marquée des métastases pulmonaires, démontrant le potentiel le potentiel anti-métastatique de l'EA. En conclusion, il semble que l'EA-2x/ 3 permette de réduire à la fois la croissance tumorale et les métastases osseuses du poumon, pouvant être médiées en partie par la réduction des systèmes vasculaire, lymphatique et nerveux associés à la tumeur.
